In this article Wiki Trips attempts to allay visa applicant fears as it concerns the issues of visa fee increment.

According to US Consulate on visa procurement, Visa applicants, including children, are required to pay a non-refundable, non-transferable visa Application Fee, sometimes referred to as the MRV fee, before applying for a nonimmigrant visa. The visa application fee must be paid whether a visa is issued or not. In Nigeria, depending on your visa class, the majority of visa applicants will pay either $160, $190 or $265 at GT Bank. This is the payment majority applicants are familiar with.

However, the Consulate General of the United States of America has also stipulated that as from August 29, 2019, a new fee referred to as a Reciprocity Fee must be paid by individuals who are successful in their application in order for the visa to be issued. This fee is in addition to the non-immigrant visa application fee (MRV) initially paid. Successful visa application will not be processed if Reciprocity fee is not paid. You must also pay fee in cash in either Nigerian Naira or United States dollars.

According to PREMIUM TIMES the U.S. explained the introduced increment visa fee on Nigerians, by stating that it was in retaliation for that introduced by the Nigerian government on Americans. The Nigerian government has in response, announced a reduction in visa fees for Americans. The U.S., however, says such is yet to be communicated to it. They reaffirm in a statement made to THE PREMUIM TIMES that “The U.S. Embassy looks forward to receiving official diplomatic communication regarding a new fee schedule for Americans seeking Nigerian visas. Until such time, and confirmation of implementation, the reciprocity fees for approved visas to the United States will remain in place.”
